I saw the CR auto issue today; Toyota owners are very loyal. Between them,
Honda/Acura and Toyota/Lexus/Scion make up not quite half the cars with 80%
"yes" responses to "Would you buy this car again?" GM, Ford and Chrysler
only got "yes" responses at the 80% level for the Corvette, Mustang (V8
only, the V6 does not get that loyalty), Solstice (wait 'til they've owned
it a few years and enjoyed that legendary Pontiac quality), Charger,
Lucerne, Tahoe and Yukon. None of the domestics' vaunted pickups reached
80% "yes" levels and many did no better than 50% (interpretation: the Tundra
DOES stand a chance of stealing business).

For those annoyed by these statistics and interested in revisiting the
entirely bullshit allegations of CR bias in favor of imports, CR listed the
Fusion as one of the four "Most Impressive" new cars (so would I) and the
Yaris as one of the "Most Disappointing." None of their "Fun to Drive"
picks are Toyotas (Hey! My Ravs are fun to drive!). That list includes the
Corvette, Focus ZX4 ST and Cadillac CTS-V.

To its credit, Detroit is producing some pretty good cars and CR does
recognize this (I never thought I'd live long enough to see a "Fun to Drive"
Cadillac, grandpa's were all total barges). However, Detroit is still
playing catch-up in a lot of areas (see CR's reliability rankings) and CR
did not recommend any Detroit brands as Top 10 picks (reliability counts -
sorry Rick, Al and Dr. Z).

More Ford F-150 buyers were repeat buyers than any other brand.

And GM has the highest buyer loyalty for a car maker.

I opinion is that CR and Car and Driver are biased towards the Japanese.

Biased doesn't mean that they won't pick American cars, but being from
Toyota, Nissan, Honda or Subaru makes it easier to get picked.

However, while most Toyota models are reliable, the Michigan 3 do make some
reliable cars. And some very unrliable cars, too.

And, the Michigan 3 trucks are also very reliable. I don't know if the
Toyotae and Honda Ridgeline will stack up against them, yet.

The problem for the D-3 is that many of their victims have chosen not to
forget what they went through. I certainly won't. I don't care WHAT they
make now. I'd need a 5 year money back guarantee before I'd touch another
D-3 car. My definition of "car" includes "standard maintenance is fine", and
"no problems that indicate sloppiness, for the life of the car, which in my
mind is around 200k miles". Around 5 years, I'll know if I was sold a car,
or a prank.
