The only reason Toyota keeps selling these thrifty mowing machine is
for IMAGE. They sell big junky SUVs too, so they want to have a clean
image.

I think Honda is the only one NOT playing this game.

Maybe they have them for Europe. But they send the junk here because
they assume people are dummy drivers. And they actually have a point!

The cops were dumbasses because it's a job requirement.

I was going to ask if it never occurred to the guy to put it in
neutral or turn it off, which I see was the first notion of many here.
My experience is lack of power steering on a moving vehicle is pretty
much a non-issue. It certainly doesn't become non-drivable unless
things have changed radically with newer vehicles. I can steer my old
boat mid 60's Ford wagon with the p/s disconnected with no problem. In
fact in high school we used to do that to gain some horsepower for
dragging or top-end runs.

Obviously the idea would be to not leave it altogether in the off
position so the wheel locks.

Blame Toyota designers. They cater to these idiots who want "a little
automatic car," with no idea how to react in an emergency situation
or how to use the signal lights. Drivers are just issued a "license to
kill" and off they go with their little Toyota. But it could be worse
if they drove an SUV...

People who like to drive buy a VW, Mini or something... not available
in America.

You gotta go to Europe then.
