Next: Highway Patrol officer helped slow a runaway Toyota Prius from 94 mph to a safe stop
From: C. E. White on 11 Mar 2010 08:10 Did anyone else get the impression from the story that the Cop used the police cruiser to help slow down the Prius? Actually, the Prius slowed down by itself. The cop car was moved into position after the car was stopped. When I first heard the story it suggested (at least to me) that the cop car pulled in front of the Prius while it was still moving and helped stop it This is not what the cop actually said. Another of these little MOWING MACHINES runs out of control. My take on the issue is that Toyota sends the engineers with the highest IQ to work at Lexus, while those with very low IQ are assigned to Toyota. I know because I once owned a little Toyota Tercel. UNSAFE AT ANY SPEED, you know... EL CAJON, Calif. A California Highway Patrol officer helped slow a runaway Toyota Prius from 94 mph to a safe stop on Monday after the car's accelerator became stuck on a San Diego County freeway, the CHP said. Prius driver James Sikes called 911 about 1:30 p.m. after accelerating to pass another vehicle on Interstate 8 near La Posta and finding that he could not control his car, the CHP said. "I pushed the gas pedal to pass a car and it did something kind of funny... it jumped and it just stuck there," the 61-year-old driver said at a news conference. "As it was going, I was trying the brakes...it wasn't stopping, it wasn't doing anything and it just kept speeding up," Sikes said, adding he could smell the brakes burning he was pressing the pedal so hard. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_runaway_prius -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE WISE TIBETAN MONKEY SAYS "The monkey should be treated with the same respect as the lion" http://webspawner.com/users/BANANAREVOLUTION

Throw in a handful of illiteracy and a shot of just plain stupid, and you've got the potential for the story to be interpreted as a guide for pruning rose bushes.

But they send the junk here because > they assume people are dummy drivers. And they actually have a > point! Something like half the cars sold in Europe are diesels. However, there is a reason for this - diesel fuel costs much less than gasoline in Europe. In the US, there is no price advantage associated with diesel fuel. It is harder to build diesels that pass US emission requirements. Diesels are more expensive to build. Diesels don't perform as well in automotove applications. I watched Top Gear (a UK car program) Monday night. They made fun of the VW TDI Scirocco. They loved the gas model, hated the diesel version (see http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/#/new/scirocco/ , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DpXE-l8wjug&feature=related , and http://topgearepisodesonline.com/?p=392 They referred to the TDI Scirocco as a "good car ruined" and refer to the diesel engine as a "canal boat engine" (see the YouTube video around the 4 minute mark). I don't think illiteracy was involved in creating a false impression. The story siad - "EL CAJON, Calif. - A California Highway Patrol officer helped slow a runaway Toyota Prius from 94 mph to a safe stop on Monday after the car's accelerator became stuck on a San Diego County freeway, the CHP said." When you combine the line "A California Highway Patrol officer helped slow a runaway Toyota Prius" with the picture of the police cruiser stopped with it rear bumber against the front bumper of the Prius, I think it almost gauranteed people would assume that the police car pulled in front of the Prius while it was still going and used the cruiser brakes to help stop the Prius. Only later when I saw a different video clip did I learn that the officier parked his cruiser like that after the Prius was stopped. Apparently the officier thought the Prius was going to leap back to life like Christine and continue down the highway.... Ed
