We just need to put solar panels on every roof that can support them, install reversible electric meters and see what happens. I know Germany is doing this. Let's take some military-industrial complex money and redirect it to this project.

We need to improve efficiency of our appliances, vehicles and homes. TVs waste a lot of energy when they are *off* (i.e., on the off position, but still plugged in). Ditto for computer and other devices. In NYC, buildings are responsible for 80% of the greenhouse gas emissions. We can get lots of savings by improving insulation, heating, cooling and lighting. Why don't want it? Evidence please. The local k00ks have stopped to wind projects already, and a guy with a ski area had to seek 'community approval' before he could put one up to power his ski area. Even then, locals were called in and asked where they would like it. Most didn't like it at all, but cooler (and smarter) heads prevailed. He almost got it up in time for ski season. They now have to work on it in the snow. If it hadn't had so many delays by people who didn't want it (it's not even on their property) it would have been finished in October. > >>> And what about >>> the stuff that Bush Whitehouse had on its website about How Global >>> Warming is a problem? A shoal in the center of Nantucket Sound is where Cape Wind Associates hopes to build the nation's first offshore wind farm -- an array of 130 wind turbines capable of generating enough electricity to meet 75 percent of the Cape and Islands' energy needs, without burning any oil or emitting any pollution. The turbines would be miles from any coastal property, barely visible on the horizon. In fact, Cape Wind says they would be farther away from the nearest home than any other electricity generation project in Massachusetts. But like a lot of well-to-do Cape and Islands landowners and sailing enthusiasts, Kennedy doesn't want to share his Atlantic playground with an energy facility, no matter how clean, green, and nearly unseen. Last month he secretly arranged for a poison-pill amendment, never debated in either house of Congress, to be slipped into an unrelated Coast Guard bill. It would give the governor of Massachusetts, who just happens to be a wind farm opponent, unilateral authority to veto the Cape Wind project. Two weeks after he gave the Obama's a Portugese Water Dog, Kennedy showed up at the doorstep to petition Obama to stop the wind project off Cape Cod. Obama pretty much told him to hit the bricks. Hope that brib...er, dog didn't cost a LOT... |
