It's just stuff you do when you're in a position to be shut down by some
kid in a Mustang or some old guy in a British Racing Green MGB with a
roll bar and a set of Webers. Getting geewhizz stuff from offshore isn't
cheap or easy so I never bothered to even look. I started out by
measuring intake flow and density over the range of rpm at full throttle
after rejetting and setting the advance curve for best power. That told
me that the motor could benefit from longer intake runners and more
carburetor (the idea being to flatten the mid-upper torque curve while
using a cam with more duration and overlap to extend torque over 6000
rpm). The exhaust headers were just a throw-in - they prolly did as
much for gas mileage as they did for power (which wasn't much - they
went on last and were worth less than 0.3 sec in the quarter). The
carburetors were just the plain-old 2 barrel downdraft ones that come on
Corollas - I got the 2nd one from a rustbucket the dealer had taken for
a trade-in (the dealer was a hotbed of sporty-cars racers so I just
showed up sometimes on weekends and went to work either on my car or
helpin' somebody else out before heading off to the hillclimb or
whatever). The intake was machined from 2024 plate - top half and
bottom half with viton o-rings on mating faces. The carburetors sat
above a plenum with a baffle between 1-2 and 3-4 to strengthen the
signal and keep the low rpm mixture uniform. After some experimentin' I
had uniform exhaust gas temps and plug color, and a nice smooth top end.
The midrange torque went up a lot too.

Then the brakes were proven to be less than needed for hauling down from
120 mph. And the tires were just the stickiest that would fit into the
wheel wells without rubbing. Then the car was a little not-tight on
rough surfaces and a bit wishy-washy rolly-polly in a drift so I putzed
with the suspension a lot. Then it was pretty much OK for a few more
years until I bought the Supra (which was pretty good right out of the box).

That's because they drive on the wrong side of the road in OZ.

I didn't spend much money other than on raw materials like a chunk of
2024 aluminum or getting a cam ground and nitrided after I did the basic
machining. My dad had nothing to do with it. I gave him a ride in my
'56 chevy a couple of times (it had a really rough idle) but he wasn't
into cars that idled rough and blew raspberries when the secondaries
opened. And he borrowed it once but the spring loaded shifter and the
stiff clutch pedal annoyed him so he never axed again.

Wouldn't know. Figures that you're probably think Obama's all that.
