Don't let the facts get in his way!

I guess you could argue that a lot of the clunkers that would normally
go onto the used car market, increasing supply, instead were junked,
decreasing the overall supply of used cars and driving up used prices in
general. However it's a real stretch to believe that someone who was
looking for a used Explorer or F150 instead went shopping for a used
Corolla because the Explorers and F150s went to the junkyard.

Yes, Ed, but it removed a number of used cars from the used car pool, so
some people who would have bought one of the clunkers switched over to a
higher mileage used car, and some undoubtedly switched to a new clunker.
All in all, the pool of used cars got smaller, and cirius paribus, the
number of people probably remained about the same. Didn't you take Econ
101? Fewer used cars drives up the price of the remaining ones on
average.
