Many jet airplanes are 'fly by wire' without direct physical connections to
the control surfaces.

If designed right these do fine.

While sudden acceleration in a car is bad, sudden engine failure (turn off)
while traveling 80 mph on a busy freeway would also be bad.

I like the system supposedly found in BMWs where the computer will not allow
some higher throttle settings if the brake is being pressed.

It sounds like you've got some anger issues, particularly toward Toyota,
for whatever reason. And just because you're driving one particular
brand of car, that means that you shouldn't have to listen to ads for
other brands of cars while in your car?
