From: tak on 30 Nov 2009 10:05 I'm thinking about replacing my Rav4 (daughter just begged away the Camry) with a New Rav, a Venza, or a Chevy Silverado (Truck is on the list because of the $3500 rebate on my GM MC account). Reliability is important, Rav has excellent reports, Silverado has average, but Venza is too new for much feedback on its track record. Any first hand info on a Venza from this group would be much appreciated. Also haven't ruled out a Sienna.
From: Mike Hunter on 30 Nov 2009 11:03 Whenever one is considering buying a new vehicle, they should drive ALL those that suits their needs. Then get a TOTAL drive home price from at least TWO of the same brands dealerships, then buy the one that best suits their budget. Today every manufacturer is making great vehicles, the only real difference is style and price. Any first hand info on a Venza from > this group would be much > appreciated. Also haven't ruled out a Sienna. My Mother recently purchased a new Toyota. We looked at both the Venza and the Highlander. For whatever reason, my Mother was not interested in a RAV4, although both of my sisters own them (current generation type - one I4 and one V6). I liked the Venza the best, but my Mother bought the Highlaner instead. The Venza was more "swoopy" and looked more like an old style staion wagon, but my Mother preferred the Highlander becasue it had a more upright setting position and cost less (base model, 4 cylinder, 2WD Highlander). At the time, I tried to steer her towards the Venza becasue I liked it better, but in the end, I think she made the right choice. Both of them have essentially the same drive train (Camry based), so I doubt if either will be a problem. The Highlander is definitely roomier inside, and the difference in fuel economy is trivial (compared to either a RAV4 or a Venza - less than 2 mpg). Really, the RAV4, Venza, and Highlander are all basically Camry Station Wagons of one sort or another. All should be reliable. I find the RAV4s uncomfortable becasue of poor front seats and front seat positioning and they suffer from excessive road noise. The Highlanders have much more comfortable seating and they are queiter, except the engine seems excessively loud under moderate acceleration (4 cylinder model). I think the Venza has very comfortable seats as well. I have not driven one far enough to really say about the road noise, although I suspect the Venza's 4 cylinder engine will be as noisy as for the Highlander. Consumer Reports noted thatt the Venza had a poor ride, but I think that was becasue of the option package they tested (it had the ridiculous optional huge wheels). I'd say drive all three and pick the one you like. I would not worry about the reliabuility of any of them. Like most modern cars, they will be much more reliable than cars from even 5 years ago. Ed

I don't know what changes are plannede besides style, but it probably wouldn't hurt to at least wait a week to see what it looks like. -- Ray O (correct punctuation to reply)

We had an 05 Avalon that my wife like pretty well but wanted a 4x4 up here in No Idaho. She bought an 09 RAV4 with v-6. I have an 08 Highlander V-6 (same motor) I had a stroke years ago and so use left foot for braking - only complaint with the RAV4 is the brake pedal is a bit hard for left foot to reach. We've not taken the RAV for much of a drive but the Highlander rides quite a bit better it seems - both are Limiteds so trim same. The RAV seems to get somewhat better mileage but it hardly goes 10-15 miles anywhere. not seen a Venza but a friend has a few year old Sienna and he bitches about the mileage - he has his two young grand-daughters and loves the roominess of it though. never said, that I remember, the mileage ron |
