Or, I suppose, what are they supposed to do? I just got an 2004 xB
without, of course, an owner's manual and I'm a little puzzled at some
of the things:

What is Trac and what is the effect of turning it off? Or on for that
matter? I haven't yet summoned up the courage to press the button on
the dash.

There's a small rocker switch above the cigarette lighter with an icon
that could be either a light or a heater. My mechanic, without much
conviction says it's for fog lights -- if the car had them. I'm not so
sure. I think it's more likely some connection to the heater system.
Maybe defrosting something.

There's a switch just below the T handle on the gear shift lever, i.e.
right below the button to allow you to put the transmission in reverse
or park. What does this do?

Is there some washer fluid reservoir for the rear wiper? On my
previous car I only found out after a year that there was a reservoir
behind the trim especially for the rear washer.

It seems that locking the driver's door with the key also locks the
hatchback but the inverse is not true. Is there any way to unlock the
hatchback without unlocking any of the doors?

Thanks

It's the Traction Control button (VSC). Turning VSC off keeps the car
from trying to stop you from squealing the tires if you want. Turn it
off and the car acts just like /all/ cars did before they recently
invented VSC. VSC is an anti-lawsuit device.

Turning VSC off is helpful in snow or mud, where you might want more
control over wheelspin.

A puzzle, this one.

Is it actually a rocker switch, or just a push-in switch? Do the lines
go vertically, horizontally or diagonally? Is there a sort of parabola
depicted from which the lines emanate?

It's the Overdrive switch. You can use it to turn Overdrive off if
you're in a situtation where the transmission keeps upshifting into
Overdrive then seconds later shifting back down again, such as in semi-
heavy traffic, or on long hills. It's an anti-annoyance feature.

Only the one reservoir for front and rear.

Nope. Turn the key to "unlock" once unlocks the driver's door. Turning
it twice in succession (a double-click of sorts) unlocks everything else
at once.

You have responses going to your email. Stop that!

The TRAC is a traction control switch. It uses the ABS to sense wheelspin
and apply the brakes accordingly. It's sometimes a PITA. Hold the TRAC
switch down to turn it off/on. It is on by default, IIRC

If it looks like a sideview of a headlith with (diagonal?) lines on it,
it's driving lights. They will ONLY be on when the headlights are on low
beam.

Does it say anything? PWR/ECON? This should be for the ECT to change the
shift points of the AT. PWR raisies the shift points, ECON lowers them.

Probably the same for the windshield. If you can see the bottle, look for
the pump and see if there is a line going to the rear.

Nope. That's how it works. You can try turning the key to Unlock once, and
then do it again. I had a Celica that would unlock the passenger's door
this way.

On a Toyota/Scion, Traction Control (TRAC) and Vehicle Stability Control
(VSC) are different features. TRAC controls wheelspin on the powered wheels
by reducing engine power and applying the brakes if necessary, while VSC
reduces the vehicle's tendency to skid or spin by sensing vehicle speed,
each individual wheel speed, and steering angle and applying brakes to
individual wheels as necessary to stop or reduce the skid or spin.

I stand corrected, thanks.
