Hello,

Are the recalls for the gas pedal problem related solely to: if you take
your foot off, the car keeps going (at a constant speed) ?

I have heard some comments that the car actually speeds up.

If so, how can it possibly be just friction holding the gas pedal in a
fixed position ? Wouldn't this be more computer related ?

Have there bee complaints (also) along this line ?

Thanks,
Bob

The reports are that the car speeds up. It could be that the car does not
coast because the pedal is stuck -- Toyota is saying the pedal is
mechanically stuck (binding) -- so the driver fiddles with the pedal using
his foot, and the pedal sticks further down causing the car to speed up, and
the cycle continues ...

The reported fix is a shim that is slipped between the return spring and a
fixed support piece. If the spring is binding on the support, then the pedal
will not return when the foot is lifted, the shim is intended to provide a
smoother surface than the metal-to-metal contact that happens now.

You're right though, if the car is speeding up AND the pedal isn't actually
stuck, then this would seem to point to a computer related problem. But if
the car is cruising along, the driver lifts his foot but the car does not
slow, so the driver manipulates the pedal with his foot and the car then
speeds, this would indicate the pedal is stuck due to mechanical failure.

Just replace them with Denso made pedals, and cut CTS out of the loop.

I'm sure they've been cut as a supplier already.

If Denso is so great, why is the Japanese goverment forcing Toyota to
recall Prusi'es.

Probably not. For a couple of reasons - 1) Toyota either designed the part
and/or approved the design and is the liable party, and 2) Toyota needs all
the pedal assemblies it can get.

Given Toyota's buisness practices, I am sure they nickel and dimed CTS
almost to the point of zero profit on the pedals. Toyota is famous for
screwing suppliers (and Customers).

Why aren't the Japanese-supplied accelerator pedals causing problems?
