From: Nobody Important on 27 Nov 2007 14:34 I had some bad luck on a remanufactured alternator the dealer installed in June 06 - I think the bearing is failing because it's making a whining sound that you can hear in the cabin. Naturally, the warranty ran out after a year. Dealer now wants $562 plus installation for a new Denso one. $260 plus install for a reman'd one whose maker I wouldn't find out until it was installed. There are some attractive prices on USA websites but I can't seem to find one that will ship to Ontario, Canada. Can anybody recommend one? Also, any thoughts on buying a new alternator as opposed to a reman'd one?
From: johngdole on 27 Nov 2007 21:27 That's why I don't blindly use dealer service departments. For items like alternators, radiators, calipers, etc, it's NAPA new or rebuilts for me. Competitive prices and no problems so far. Check out NAPA Canada for their reman with a good warranty, or a local store that sells Bosch new alternators (lifetime warranty, 2 year road- side assistance). Just don't buy a blue-light-special reman like that Toyota dealer seems to be doing. Bosch new alternators look good too, but I've gotten used to NAPA rebuilt alternators because of the fast turnaround when you need one. http://www.napaonlinecanada.com/uap/Client/en/Napa-Online/index.asp http://www.boschautoparts.com/Products/AlternatorsandStarters/ On Nov 27, 11:34 am, Nobody Important <Dr.Xen...(a)gmail.com> wrote: > I had some bad luck on a remanufactured alternator the dealer installed > in June 06 - I think the bearing is failing because it's making a > whining sound that you can hear in the cabin. From: johngdole on 27 Nov 2007 21:29 For parts shipped to Canada, also check out www.rockauto.com. But the listed prices don't include taxes and import duties, which may add a big chunk to your total bill. I just ordered a reman'd Denso 90A from them for US$235.03 including tax and duty. There will probably be a brokerage charge but even with that the price is competitive. Denso seems to repack the bearing on their reman'd units; I bet the local reman outfit my dealer uses didn't do that. Now here's to hoping the bearing doesn't self destruct before the replacement arrives! Interestingly, the management team at rockauto are all electrical engineers, so they're clearly trustworthy! :)
