From: Frank on 30 Nov 2007 14:20 I have a '98 Camry LE with a bit over 90,000 miles. I understand that the recommended servicing includes changing the timing belt. What's a reasonable US price for this 90K service? Thanks, Frank

You may get some folks here that will tell you "as long as they are doing the timing belt, have them replace the water pump or some other thing at the same time to save $$$"....well, nice thought, but in the real world it does not work in my experience.. Yes, they need to remove the pump and a belt or two to replace your timing belt.....But in my experience in the past couple of decades with three different TOY dealers and a few different independent mechanics, you will NOT save any money by doing this. They WILL charge you the full price to replace the water pump, including labor, etc. if you ask them to do it at the same time despite the fact that they already have to take it out, etc....same with the serpentines, etc. This irritating fact has been discussed quite often on the web and very few folks that I know have been able to have their mechanics waive the extra cost. It is just considered a "complete and separate job" even tho. it is not!!! You may be able to negotiate better, although, honestly, the water pump in my 87 Corolla is still the original and is at 240K.....so maybe just willy nilly replacement is NOT a good idea.

The independant I took my 91 Camry to several years ago recommended I change the water pump and only charged me for the price of the pump extra and the coolant. I had about 90K on the car at the time. Good point about asking if they will wave the extra charges.

From: johngdole on 3 Dec 2007 22:39 A "complete" timing job should include the following. I have a preference for Gates belts and hoses. And you should negotiate a "package deal". Plus tune-up (I use NGK Iridium plugs), oil change, and tranny service (I would drop the pan and change out the strainer). (earlier www.rockauto.com prices for 3/5SFE) GATES TCK199 (kit of timing belt with two pulleys and instruction) $84.79 GATES Part # K030295 PS belt $4.32 GATES Part # K050435 Alt/AC $12.12 FEL-PRO TCS45641 Cam seal $4.11 FEL-PRO TCS45920 Crank seal $6.04 BCA Part # 221820 Oil pump seal $2.71 AISIN (Toyota #16110-79185) water pump $58.79 your local NAPA store has Airtex water pump FEL-PRO VS50304R valve cover gasket set $13.94 www.gates.com www.napaonline.com www.ngksparkplugs.com On Nov 30, 11:20 am, Frank <j...(a)eel.org> wrote: > I have a '98 Camry LE with a bit over 90,000 miles.
