So why would crime go up more in Maricopa County (Phoenix area) than
Pima County (Tucson area)? Republicans are stronger in Maricopa
County, which doesn't doesn't border Mexico, as Pima County does.
OTOH Mighty Sheriff Joe Arpaio (R) presides over Maricopa County, and
he's squandered law enforcement resources on silly, high-publicity,
low-effectiveness measures, like his posse and the arrests of illegals
working at restaurants, rather than arresting Mexican drug dealers and
gangs. More proof that Arpaio is ineffective: the Goldwater
Institute said Arpaio's dept. had one of the lowest arrest clearance
rates in the nation, 18%, meaning 82% of those arrested were let go
without charges.
