The traditional "classes" are sub compact, compact, mid size and full size. Don't know where they came from, but in the industry they use letters, A body being something like the Smart, and F being something like a Camaro.

The U.S. EPA's categories are probably the most widely accepted, but there are also classes determined by rental car companies, J.D.
