It is called Toyotas "Recall of the week." Toyota is finally doing what
the law requires them to do, to avoid another $16,000,000 fine by the NHTSA.

That may be your opinion but actually auto manufacturers are required by law
to notify the NHTSA of safety problem within five business days after
becoming "aware" of the problem and then issue a recall. That was why
Toyota was fined $16,000,000 for delaying the "unintended acceleration"
problem

Of course it does. Every day there's a media story about Toyota. You'd
think Toyota would pull some advertising in retribution. NBC leads the
list.

With the US government in the car business, wouldn't it make sense to beat
down your biggest rival?

As a former GM owner I am convinced that if the government applied the same
enthusiasm to examining GM products, there would be more problems uncovered
than with Toyota. I shutter each time I rent a car and end up with a GM
product.
