to be good for up to 10,000 miles, even though they recommend changing it
every 3000?

I had a mechanic today, try to sell me "longer distance" oil instead and
it sounded like BS, being I have it changed every 3000.

10,000 miles for dinosaur oil? I'm not even sure most people would use
synthetic oil for that long.

Back in the 80's Toyota had a 10,000 mile oil change interval for
normal service and they did not recommend synthetic oil (in fact they
actually recommended against it).

3000 mile oil changes provide absolutely no benefit, other to the bottom
line of the quick oil change places.

Even 5000 miles is being rather anal, but at least it's less ridiculous
than 3000 miles.

There's also absolutely no benefit to using high-priced synthetic oil if
you're doing 3000 or 5000 mile oil changes. If you're doing extended
change intervals (which have problems beyond the lubricity of the oil)
then synthetic can have some benefit. The biggest advantage of synthetic
is if the vehicle is operated in extremely cold climates, or if it's a
very high performance engine.

I see exactly that in the Owner's Manual for my 1981 Corolla. The "severe"
schedule, however, recommends 3,750-mile intervals.

There is no mention at all of synthetic oils.

There is also a marked absence of the latterly common dire and colorful
WARNINGS. Liability laws hadn't quite had time to take chunks out of
anybody, evidently.

As an interesting contrast, the Owner's Manual for my Canadian-market 1975
Corolla specifies 3,000-mile oil changes.
