I own the same - 2003 Avalon, I just looked,
and the blades do sit out/up somewhat high!

In the 9 years I've owned it, I didn't realize it till now.
and I'm not going to sleep well tonight!

I'm going to put an ad in the paper tomorrow,
and sell my beloved car...

as Ray said you have got to pull them up to the above rest position to
change the blades and then push um back down - If I remember right and Ray
would know, I believe I only had to do the passenger side as both unlocked
with the same pull up.

A push on the passenger side should take care of both sides.
