From: irafeuerstein on 21 Sep 2008 14:57 Hey Everyone. I need help. I have a 95 4runner (6 cylinder) and it won't shift into reverse or drive. Just feels like it is neutral. The transmission fluid is full, but kind of dark looking. Any ideas on what this is?

As a desperation move you could try a transmission flush (not drain and refill but flush) but that is not generally recommended when the fluid has turned dark and smells burnt. By the time the fluid has degraded and the trans won't shift, it's probably gone. Good luck. Al
From: johngdole on 21 Sep 2008 22:12 How long ago was the ATF/strainer changed? Was it overheated (towing)? If not driveline related problem, then the valve body/strainer are probably plugged up with debris. See the article from the Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Assoc. http://www.atra.com/consumers/bulletins/cb-111.pdf Looks like a rebuild is in your near future. A fluid/strainer change may do little at this stage, but you can always give it a try. From: johngdole on 21 Sep 2008 22:31 I'd also check with a ATRA local shop. That should provide a better level of skill for rebuilding the A340-series transmission. http://www.atra.com/source/amembers/directorysearch.cfm?searchtype=reb You can also call Jasper to check on the prices of their remanufactured line and see if they stock A340 series. If so a remanufactured tranny will cost more, but typically carry 3-year 100K miles warranty: http://www.jasperengines.com/transmissions-automobile.htm If you have mechanically inclined friends or yourself are and don't mind trying to salvage the tranny, then consider getting a valve body gasket kit (should cost less than an overhaul kit), ATF strainer/pan gasket. Drop the pan, clean up all the debris if the system isn't choked full of it, clean up the valve body (probably sticking in many shift valves and solenoids), reinstall with new gaskets and see if that even works or buys a little more time. But this is a gamble, even if an overhaul kit is as little as $80. http://www.transtarindustries.com/ On Sep 21, 11:57 am, "irafeuerst...(a)gmail.com" <irafeuerst...(a)gmail.com> wrote: > Hey Everyone. > > I need help. > > I have a 95 4runner (6 cylinder) and it won't shift into reverse or > drive.
