Toyota is listing the rated MPG of the 6-speed manual 4x4 as being lower
than the 5-speed auto. This seems to defy logic to me. Does anyone have any
real-world experience to report for actual MPG?

Any ideas why this is? Are they using different 4WD systems?

My real world MPG readings for a 2005 version are right in the predicted
range. The 2005 manual is rated for 1 MPG less than the automatic, as well.

My 2007 Taco 4X4 with the 5-speed auto gets about 18.5 in the city. On the
one road trip I've taken, with about 200 pounds of cargo, it got 25 mpg.
But I was driving at 65 mph. Regular gas. I noticed when I was going 65,
the tach was showing less than 2000 rpm.

Yes, I'm assuming that it's a matter of RPMs, the auto must have a killer
overdrive.

Don't know about the 4 x 4 and can't speak for the MT, however, my
results so far with 2007 tacoma double cab 2wd prerunner.

very close to the Toyota estimates of 19/22 for this version.
I'm very happy.
