From: kpb on 30 Apr 2010 10:43 My ignition seized and I had it removed. Now I drive starting my car, an old Corolla, with a screwdriver. It still runs like a dream with 200K plus miles. Is it legal? Or if pulled over will the cops give me a hard time?

Clean out the drugs and have your birth certificate, insurance papers, drivers license, your lawyer's number and a working cell phone with you, you will ought to be OK. And carry treats for the drug dog.

If they DO notice it like at a traffic stop it may raise a little suspicion, but if your name is on your license and the car's registration it should not be a problem. All it is is an anti-theft feature. Remember the days when Chevys had an ignitiion you could leave unlocked and start without a key?

Beyond you using the same technique that car thieves use, I see no problem with the cops. The lock on the steering is there to protect you. The keys are there to protect you. If you live in a state with a safety inspection, maybe things are different than in my universe, but the only issue I see is that you look like a car thief to most cops. I suggest you make sure your license and registration have exactly the same information on them. Get one updated to match the other so you can show, this is me and this is my car. We live at the same house.

It was very convenient until somebody came along and set the ignition to the Lock position because this required the key to change the setting. |
