"What the right knows that the left doesn't"
[
....
Much of the noise that comes from the right wing seems pretty dumb, quite
frankly, and lots of the right wing heroes could be poster children for
diminished mental capacity. From the intellectually forlorn Dan Quayle, who
mistakenly corrected a school child's spelling of "potato," to the always
under-qualified George W. Bush ("Is our children learning?"), the right wingers
constant display of stupidity would be amusing if they didn't have so much power
to do so much harm. The zany zoo of right wing "thinkers" has a devolving cast
of cretins that includes Sharrin Angle, Rand Paul, and the ever popular Sarah
Palin, just three of the many stooges who make it clear that smarts ain't what
the right wing are peddling these days.

....

But there's a reason those big money people know ol' Rushbo is a bargain even
with his hundreds of millions in salary, and why they keep pumping money into
Glenn Beck, and the rest of that gaggle of Goebbels types who so relentlessly
push their agenda on right wing media, all those blathering bullies in the
propaganda ministry of the American far right.

They know something liberals never seem to learn. In a war of ideas, you can't
win unless you keep soldiers on the field. Even bad ideas will prevail if they
are repeated incessantly, and even weak arguments will win if opposing voices
aren't raised.

The right wing doesn't keep all that aural pollution in the air 24/7 because
they hope to persuade liberals to their point of view, or to make moderates
swing hard right. They keep that noise on because a harried and frustrated long
haul trucker will, over time, come to be influenced by what he hears repeated so
single-mindedly. And the commuter, stuck in traffic and angry at his boss, will
plug into the incessant whining and complaining he hears from Rush Limbaugh, and
he will take as the source of his problems the guys who Limbaugh uses as
punching bags every day he takes to the air. And the guy standing at the gas
pump, watching his money go into his gas tank, is anxious to blame someone for
his lack of control over the things that circumscribe his life.

Rush and the others give people someone to blame. It's a nefarious Negro, come
from Kenya to make things harder. It's liberal Democrats who stand in the way of
the entrepreneurial spirit that would, if unfettered, make life so much easier
for us all, would make gas cheaper, and goods cheaper, and jobs plentiful. It's
the lazy welfare cheats and the illegals who vote for Democrats that make it so
hard for the good people to prosper.

And, in the absence of much counterbalance to such nutso arguments, far too many
people believe the nonsense. Resentments build as Americans who don't share
those views are demonized as unpatriotic, not really the sort of people we want
here.

The right wing knows the effectiveness of the Big Lie. They invented it. Tell a
lie often enough, and make that lie big enough, and you'll get enough people to
believe it to keep you powerful. If you don't think it works, just log in on any
political website and see how the same handful of slogans turn up, repeated
endlessly as though they were true, all of them recycled from talk radio, Beck,
or Rush, little substitutes for thinking, a catechism drummed into the heads of
their followers by endless repetition.

We just got out from under a regime that nearly took us down, and now the
liberals have mostly fallen silent again while the right sells its bill of goods
once more. God help us all if they gain control again.
