I think your observation is right on track and one that I totally missed. I

Oh come ON - You have to ask? Get the VIN from your in-laws, and go
do a title search and a bit of legwork to confirm it.

They got rid of the car in 1997. AFAIR, the car was a '94 or '95.

It's not interesting enough to me to have them dig through old
documents, and for me to bother doing the legwork.
