Toyota saved $100M by selling U.S. on cheap fix, document shows

Automotive News -- February 22, 2010 - 12:24 am ET

WASHINGTON/TOKYO (Reuters) -- A document claiming Toyota Motor Corp.
saved more than $100 million by persuading U.S. regulators to agree to
a cheap fix for unintended acceleration problems raised pressure on
the company's president as he arrived in Washington to prepare for a
grilling from lawmakers.

The 2009 internal document turned over to lawmakers and made available
Sunday shows the automaker's Washington staff trumpeting the savings
achieved by getting safety officials to end a 2007 investigation of
unintended acceleration complaints with a floor mat recall.

Toyota on Sunday reiterated that it was conducting a top-to-bottom
review of all its operations.

"Our first priority is the safety of our customers, and to conclude
otherwise on the basis of one internal presentation is wrong," the
company said.

But the Department of Transportation said the document highlighted
Toyota's slow response to the safety problems.

"Unfortunately, this document is very telling," said spokeswoman
Olivia Alair in an e-mailed statement.

The actual "document" is at
http://download.gannett.edgesuite.net/detnews/2010/pdf/0220toyota.pdf
.. To me it doesn't seem much different that 100's of other BS
documents service type organization create to try and justify their
salaries. It was intended to impress the people at Toyota's
headquarters, nothing more. I am sure the Washington "teams" for most
other manufacturers have created similar PowerPoint presentations.

The so called "smoking gun" stuff is on page 16:
