From: john on 13 Jul 2010 20:31 Toyota has told U.S. auto safety officials that a steering problem that could affect 749,685 Corolla and Matrix models isn't a safety defect -- but it will offer free repairs to owners who complain, the Free Press has learned. If allowed by federal regulators, the move would save Toyota from adding to its total of 8.5 million vehicles recalled worldwide this year, most because of defects tied to sudden acceleration. But Toyota also would avoid the legal requirements of a safety recall, such as notifying all affected owners and updating regulators on how many repairs had been made. http://www.freep.com/article/20100713/BUSINESS01/7130378/1210/Toyota-offers-fix-for-steering-in-Corolla-Matrix
