"Tax increases under Palin led offshore drilling push"
[
The beloved Sarah Palin is lying through her teeth. On her Twitter page and
elsewhere, she has stated that environmentalists are responsible for the Gulf
oil spill, stating that "greenies" forced the oil companies to drill in deep
waters in the Gulf, rather than "safer" drilling sites in Alaska.

In fact, it is Palin's own actions as governor that helped push offshore
drilling. In 2008, the Republicans in Congress defeated a bill that would have
put a windfall tax on oil companies. But in Alaska, under Palin as governor,
increased taxes were passed, allowing Alaska to capture up to 75 percent of the
value of a barrel. BP-Alaska stated there was no longer any upside to drilling
in Alaska. BP delayed development on the North Shore, and Conoco-Alaska scrapped
a planned refinery. Alaskan oil revenues doubled from 2007 to 2008. Of course,
these revenues came in part from the increased gas prices passed on by the oil
companies and paid by citizens in the lower 48 states.

I have no problem with what Palin did for her state in 2008, but don't try to
re-write history now. It is profit and de-regulation that led to drilling 40
miles off shore in the Gulf, not the actions of environmentalists.

I trust she will not mind my post of her material.
