I'm going with the loose fan belt theory. The belts slip when cold, and this
makes the noise you describe. Atfer a short while, usually a matter of
seconds but occasionally about a minute, the belts stop slipping and the
noise goes away.

No idea, but if you weren't already planning to, please post the
result later.

The dealership kept my car overnight and the mechanic who checked it out
said it was fine. The squeaking fan belt was caused by moisture. We had
several consecutive days of light fog overnight.

I was also told that the radiator cooling fan is computer controlled, and
that it is not only triggered by the temperature of the motor coolant. I
explained that the radiator fan would turn on moments after starting the car
while the motor was just warming up. When I showed this to the mechanic, he
just turned off the ventilation fan inside the car, and the radiator fan
instantly turned off and stayed off. He explained that with higher humidity
and temperature, the computer in the car may anticipate a higher load on the
engine when the ventilation fan is turned on, regardless if the air
conditioner is on or off, and when this happens, the radiator cooling fan
turns on, even if the motor hasn't reached a high enough temperature.

Funny, I've had the car for 3 years and have only noticed this quirk within
the last couple of weeks. The weather this September has been hotter and
way more humid than any month following last spring. I guess that explains
it.

Thanks for all the input!

How many electric cooling fans are in the engine compartment and how many
are on the outside of the engine compartment?

Only one fan on the radiator and one ventilation fan behind the glove box --
why do you ask?

There are several different setups for radiator and condenser cooling on
vehicles with transverse mounted engines, and I was wondering which one your
car has.

Some have 2 electric fans mounted side by side on the engine compartment
side, 1 for the radiator and 1 for the AC condenser. The radiator cooling
fan is controlled by the engine coolant temperature sensor, and the AC
condenser fan is controlled by the AC circuit.

Some have 1 fan mounted on the engine compartment side, and 1 fan mounted in
front of the condenser. They are controlled the same way as the side by
side setup.

Another setup is to have 1 larger fan mounted on the engine compartment side
of the radiator, and it is controlled by a combination of demand by the
engine cooling system and AC system. It sounds like this is the setup in
your car.
