I would say what a schmuck, but depending on where you live, if they have
a Lemon Law, it might not be so bad!

A 10 year old Corolla should not cost nearly $6000. I'd offer $4000.

Remember, on a Toyota, 10-15 years is just about when you start having
to make some larger repair expenditures that something like a Ford or GM
car needed at 5 to 7 years, like new shocks and struts, muffler, some of
the sensors for the emissions control system, etc. Probably about time
for a brake job, if there's 49K miles on it they may never have done the
brakes at all, or it may be time for the second pad replacement which
requires new rotors (you can usually reface the rotors only once).
