The Corolla is not a bad car, but it is overpriced for what you get.
It is an old, mostly proven design but seems cramped to other cars in
the class. In that class my favorite is the Mazda3. The Focus is
cheaper, at least as reliable as the Corolla, but dull (but then so is
the Corolla). I have no personal experience with Hyundais, but most of
the reviews for the Elantra are good and it does have a very good
warranty. Still, I'd take a hard look at the Mazda3. That is what I
bought my son in 2008 and it has been completely trouble free so far
(0 repairs in or out of warranty). Civics are nice too, but even more
overpriced than the Corolla.

In the end, I guess you need to decide what is important to you. If
initial cost is the main factor, then the Hyundai or the Focus are
probably good choices. If sportiness is important, then the Mazda3 or
Civic are good choices. If you favor Toyotas, then I guess the Corolla
is OK to, but it has nothing to really make it standout. To me it is
the weakest entry in the field. If you can get past the Toyota
reliability hyperbole, it doesn't have much to offer. I guess you
could sum up a Corolla as a well assembled but tired old design that
punishes the driver with a cramped cabin, weak performance, and
mid-pack reliability. It does have excellent fuel economy, and for
some reason, decent resale value. The high short term resale value
makes the Corolla look good cost wise, if you trade frequently (every
2 or 3 years). However, if you are in it for the long run, the
advantage in resale value is negligible (and besides, if this is
important, the Civic has much better resale value).
