There was a reason I was gone for >2 days.

We got hit HARD. Power came back on today at 6PM, 43 hours.

Now, for the GOOD news!

I was out for a ride in the Supra, since it was HOT and cruising around
with the top off seemed like a good idea. I didn't watch the evening news,
and was listening to XM in the car...

About 10:30 there were some awful BIG drops of rain so I decided it would
probably be a good idea to put the roof on. As soon as I stopped the car
and opened the trunk (<5 minutes...) the wind came up. I put the roof on
the car, reached into the console to get the tool to tighten it up and
<WHOOSH>!!!!! My roof is GONE!!!! A quick search said it was out of sight,
so with branches blown from trees beating against the side of the car I
decided being parked under a stand of Pines and Oaks was NOT a good place
to be, so into the now near-hurricane wind and rain I drove off, no roof,
getting soaked to the skin. There was a gas station with a canopy two
miles down the road. About 1/2 mile down the road a @%#$*&!$! *PORTABLE
GARAGE* PROVED it was portable and smashed into the side of the Supra
before continuing it's journey across the road.

I made it to the gas station but the canopy was of little help since the
wind was blowing the rain sideways. Attemps at putting up plastic over the
roof opening were futile, so I went in the convenience store and had a
cup of coffee till the storm blew over, a total of 15 minutes.

On the way home I encountered a pine tree across the road and since I was
1 mile from home said "screw it!", drove over the skinniest part of the
tree and dragged it 3/4 of the way home. I took the Camry out of the
garage and put the Supra in, but by now the worst was over.

I went back to the scene of the crime, and as I was looking for the errant
roof panel a cop came by and asked what was up. I said, "You aren't going
to believe this one..." He said, "Tonight I'd believe anything". I told
him the tale and he said for insurance I should notify the police, "But,
not tonight!"

I spent 20 minutes walking up and down with a flashlight and figured the
wind must have lifted it over the pine trees and was thankful on that side
of the road there wasn't anyone it could kill, so as I was packing up and
trying to decide how to tell the insurance company *this* one, I saw a
glint about 7 feet behind my car...

A 15 minute storm knocked out power to 25,000 homes, and the power started
coming on block by block last night ~8PM. People to the north, south and
west of us had power, but my block and 2/3 of the town were out until
today.

Today I took the Supra out of the garage to asses the damage. When the
roof blew off the car it hit the top of the driver's 1/4 panel near the
hatch, but the wind must have been holding it up because all there was
were a couple scratches in the paint. The Flying Garage hit the
passenger's side mirror, put a magnificent crack in it and blew the glass
out. Surprisingly, that was the ONLY damage from the hit! We were going to
redo the body next year anyway, so there isn't much more to do than was
originally planned. Too bad it didn't hit the windshield since I need a
new one...

The roof is a bit scratched and has a couple gouges but is otherwise none
the worse. A bit of fiberglass and a quick spray should have that alright,
but when I placed it in the opening it didn't want to fit in as easily as
before...

Wow...I am getting a "weather app" for my Palm phone...!

The problem with modern and new stuff is that we dont know how good it's
going
to be until it's old and it's still going...

We've had some sudden bad ones up here, but nothing I was ever actually
stuck in. I feel for ya, here. But for the grace of God, as they say...

Last summer we had a doozy that knocked out the power for 8-hours. The rain
was a sheet against the windows such that you couldn't see out at all for a
good half-hour. The basement shipped some water due to a foundation crack
that's under the deck, on the neighbor's side (he shares the other half of
our semi), and is normally insulated from rain. The stupid thing is, after
the incident, my neighbor NEVER BOTHERED TO PATCH THE CRACK even though he
KNEW that's where the water came in, and HIS basement leaked as well! In
October, before the cold hit, I had to reach over to his side through the
fence under both our decks, and apply silicone to seal the crack.

Or just keep www.weather.com up in a tab all the time in your Web browser
at home, the way I do. A quick glance before you head out, and you know
what's coming down the pipe.
