Hmmmm....transmissions are a mystery to me. I wonder what model it is, but the unfortunate thing is my Corolla GTS is an FR layout, and the FX is a FF layout... Unless the driveshaft and rear axle fit...

The term "shifting gears" is kind of a misnomer because the gears themselves don't actually shift. Connected to the actual gear is a brass cone that looks like a canning funnel with teeth on the outside. There is a brass synchronizer ring that fits over the cone, and on the inside of the ring are a series of fine ridges, kind of like a coarse file. When you shift gears, the fork pushes the ring against the cone and the fine ridges apply friction to the cone so that they eventually end up spinning at the same speed, a process known as synchronizing. When the ridges on the synchro ring get worn, they don't grab the cone so the teeth on the syncro ring make a chattering or grinding noise when they engage the teeth on the cone. The reason I suggested ATF is that the lower viscosity means that there is less lubrication between the cone and rings, so they may grab more easily and there is less drag so the cone will spin up more easily. IIRC, the regular FX has an 8 valve engine, while the FX 16 had the same 16 valve engine that the Corolla GTS had so while the engine are the same, the transmissions are not. -- Ray O (correct punctuation to reply)
