From: steve on 20 Mar 2010 18:23 I test drove a Honda Civic and a Corolla today. Despite my bias against the Toyota due to recent problems the Corolla as a car impressed me much more and was cheaper. I've heard people say that the parts and techniques faulted with Toyota are used by other car companies. I've also heard that other car companies have had acceleration problems and that the US highway department considered all of them statistically insignificant. So, I am wondering if it is safe to buy a Corolla. Does anyone know where I read these statistics and facts for myself? Thanks Steve

The steering feel is not quite right, and some drivers have reported the car veering left or right on it's own. I am not saying the reports are right, I'm only saying what they are. Do your homework.

Yes!! Safer than getting struck by lightening. Safer than > driving the freeway in a Ford, chev, or any other car. Yes, it's safe. While I agree a Corolla is safer than being struck by lighting, part of your statement is anti-domestic hogwash. It is typical of the BS Toyota owners put out in an effort to justify overpaying for average vehicles. IIHS (www.iihs.org) has sataistics related to safety and is a good source of information. Here is what they had to say about the 2010 Corolla (see http://www.iihs.org/ratings/ratingsbyseries.aspx?id=305 ): "2010 Toyota Corolla: good performance in front, side, rollover, and rear tests and standard electronic stability control" The 2010 Civic was rated the same. The most recent Insurance Loos Ratings for small cars are at http://www.iihs.org/research/hldi/composite_cls.aspx?y=2006-2008&cls=2&sz=2&sort=name. The Corolla did not fair as well in these ratings (compared to the Civic). However, these rating refelct a combination of the inherent safety of the car and the quality of the drivers who operate them. It may be that the Corolla is every bit as safe as the Civic, but for whatever reason Corolla drivers are more likely to get into accidents. Ed
