From: Hachiroku ハチロク on 27 Jan 2010 15:15 Didn't want to say this with Gloating Johnnie hovering over, but I had an '85 P/U that was having a hard time getting up hills. I couldn't figure it out until someone said, what about the fuel filter? I had gotten the truck from my stepfather and he was horrible at auto maintenance, so it seemd like a good bet. Now, this was an '85, and I had it from '91 to '93, and the bed was rotting on the sides like a lot of them did. I lifted the hood looking for the filter, and then I remembered the trucks got them near the tank, si I bent down and...I'm looking at daylight. But, the bed isn't THAT rusty!!! So I went to the other side of the truck, and sure enough, the bed wasn't that rusty. I got down on my hands and knees...and saw I was looking through an 18" hole...in the FRAME!!! My wife said "my brother can weld that". I said, your brother can have the truck! and sold it for $125 to a junkyard. They took it off the road and ran it in the yard for a while. BTW, ALL Toyota beds sold in the US are made in...California. So the factory can't be blamed for the rusting beds. But the frame...

Dana had allowed their people to get sloppy and ignore Toyota's corrosion-protection standards. Now the problem is CTS, another American company. The gas pedal parts in question were made at CTS's Canadian plant. In fact, just about all of Toyota's recent recalls have involved North American suppliers. Doesn't say much for us, does it? -- Tegger
From: Mike Hunter on 27 Jan 2010 21:48 Typical Toyota loyalist, blame someone else. The problem was not Dana's problem, they had to use the Japanese Nippon steel supplied by Toyota. Ford has been making F150 frames for years with Bethlehem, now Mittel Steel, and they last much longer than three years. Steel rusts unless you prevent it from doing so with surface treatmenets. Dana failed to do what the Japanese supplier did, and so their frames rusted. -- Tegger
