Hi folks,
98 Sienna 200K miles.
Brake light comes on and the brakes work 'fine'.

Where to start? Do brakes have codes on the regular code reader?

Thanks,
Tomes

Start by
1) checking to make sure that the parking brake is off all the way.
2) looking at the brake fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir.

If the brake fluid level is low or near the "min" mark, the brake linings
are probably worn and should be inspected and changed if necessary.

The OP has a Toyota, not a BMW, Jeep, or F 150 so he is probably better
served with advice pertaining to a Toyota than to other vehicles.

The Toyota system is KISS simple. If the brake warning light has not
extinguished after the car starts, check the parking brake to see if it is
disengaged. If the parking brake is disengaged and the light is still on,
then check the braking system. A quick check of the owner's manual explains
what to check if the light is illuminated.

The warning system is also KISS simple. There is a switch on the parking
brake lever or pedal that closes the circuit to illuminate the warning light
if the lever is pulled up or the pedal depressed, and for a low fluid level,
there is a float switch in the brake fluid reservoir cap. If the fluid
level is low, the float drops, and the switch attached to the float closes a
circuit and illuminates the light.
