As even darned near all my grandkids are out of public schools, I've a
question.

Are some schools still doing so called "social promotions"? I've not heard
of it for several years but there was a blurb on CFP asking that too.

So, I figured some of you (hopefully most of you are younger than me!) still
have kids or grandkids in public schools, thus knowing.

I don't know that social promotions are still taking place. I suspect not,
but it depends on the State where the practice is employed.

Our kids in California have to take a High School Exit Exam. They take it as
many times as they need to, starting in the sophmore year (10th Grade). If
they don't pass, they get to study up and take it again. They have to pass
to graduate high school. This tends to eliminate the benefits of social
promotion -- why promote a kid (especially in high school) if he can't pass
an 8th grade test in the 10th grade?

We (California) is trying to force 8th graders to take algebra, so that they
can be ready for geometry by the time they make high school.

This is similar to the Regent's in NY.

Good! I remember 15 or so years ago the schools saying they had to do
"social promtions" cause the stigma of failing was so bad - thank goodness
they woke up.
