From: Hachiroku ハチロク on 30 Jul 2010 20:29 If you're here illegally, and whelp a pup, it's an American Citizen. I guess with all of the latest negative press and pressure from Conservative, Lindsey Graham thinks he's figured out a nice bone to throw for appeasement. Now, all of a sudden, he's very irritated by all of these anchor babies born here in America and he says: “I may introduce a constitutional amendment that changes the rules if you have a child here,” Graham said during an interview with Fox News' Greta Van Susteren. “Birthright citizenship I think is a mistake, that we should change our Constitution and say if you come here illegally and you have a child, that child's automatically not a citizen.” Asked how intent Graham is on introducing the amendment, the South Carolina Republican responded: “I got to.” “People come here to have babies,” he said. “They come here to drop a child. It's called “drop and leave.” To have a child in America, they cross the border, they go to the emergency room, have a child, and that child's automatically an American citizen. That shouldn't be the case. That attracts people here for all the wrong reasons.” Also up for consideration are "Birth Tours", where women ready to pop come here, have a "US Citizen", then go home. On the surface, this really isn't bad, since when the baby comes of age he can choose whether to stay where he is, or claim his US birthright and "come home". However, some are using this as a hedge against economic downturns in their own countries, and then coming back with their "US citizen".

And an even dumber idea is that an American born child of illegal aliens somehow confers anchor status on the parents. If the parents get into a deportable situation....deport them and they are free to take the child with them.

Hence the term, anchor baby. If you had a clue, you'd know of the 14th Amendment that gives citizenship to anybody born on US soil. The purpose of the Amendment is that they (the authors of 14) wanted to give citizenship to the children of slaves who were brought in but were not themselves citizens. The move is to change 14 so that the children of Legal Immigrants will be citizens, but the children of illegal immigrants will be considered to be the citizenship of the mother. This would make it so the parent could not claim that she would be separated from her child if she were deported but the child (an American, after all) remained.

Elian was not sent home with a parent, his mother died coming here and he was alone without any parents. His father was in Cuba, and Elian was here with aunts and uncles from his mother's side of the family. Elian was sent home to a parent, not with a parent. Anchor babies are born here of illegal immigrant mothers, making it difficult to deport the mother because the baby is a citizen for no other reason that it was born here. The mother, 8+ months pregnant, manages to crawl under the wire on Sunday at 11:45pm, and the baby is born on Monday at 12:15am, and it's a citizen because of the 14th Amendment. |
