Hi all,

Bought my grandpa's '85 Toy pickup as I needed a vehicle quickly.
309,000 miles on it and the tranny leaks. Couldn't find where it was
leaking, but an EZ Lube tech said it was leaking bad via the output
shaft and wouldn't do a transmission flush.

The info I need is, I suppose, a part number? Is it a seal, or a gasket?
I can't afford the labor so I need to do it myself.

I appreciate any help. It's the SR5 1/2 ton pickup with EFI, 4 cylinder.

Try Rock Auto or Napa, they should be able to look it up for you. Last
resort is the dealer. Bring your VIN number just in case there was
production change.

It's probably a seal if it's leaking from the shaft. Gaskets are mainly for
matings and cover plates. Also check the transmission cooler lines at the
front that connect to the radiator, those are notorious for leaking, and
need to be replaced every so often.

BTW does the Overdrive still work? Has the timing chain been replaced?

The Overdrive still works. Occasionally, it sticks in 3rd and won't
upshift, but most of the time it's fine. I went to Partstrain.com and
figured it was the seal.

Thanks for the pointer on checking the cooler lines. I'll take a look at
it this weekend as I have the time. As for the timing chain, you mean
the one on the engine, correct?

Yeah, the timing chain in the engine. As long as the tensioner is still good
and the guides don't fail, it should be ok.
