I'm reading up on the stuff again. I get frustrated every time I do
this. Everytime I tell myself there must be a blank and white answer but
I haven't found it yet. Actually it seems to be more a question of red,
pink, orange, blue.......
Zerex
This indicates their Dex-cool is OK and is plenty good enough for a
Toyota?
http://www.valvoline.com/pdf/Zerex_CoolantChart.pdf
I can't find any where on Pestone's web site that says anything about
what would be specific for Toyota.
http://www.prestone.com/products/antifreezeCoolant.php
Peak, why don't they list Toyota or Honda?
http://www.peakantifreeze.com/peak_global_lifetime.html
This can go on and on, seems none of the antifreeze makers will
actually come out and say our stuff is approved by Toyota for Toyotas.
What's going on? Is there something that keeps them being able to
specifically list the asian car makers ?
All I want to do is go to walmart and get a jug of the stuff and know
that it won't mess up my car. Is there something special about Toyota
antifreeze that justifies the higher price? If there is, what is it?

BTW, I would not use dex cool.. I think the Prestone is a closer
formula to use in Toyotas, and I've heard some bad stories about dex
cool when it starts to go bad.. Gelling, precipitation, etc.. It's
quite a bit
different than Toyota coolant as far as the formula.

Why not just go to the Toyota dealer and get the Toyota anti-freeze?
Maybe it costs twice as much as whatever Wal*Mart is selling (I doubt
it) but what are we talking about -an extra $10 bucks? Probably not.

It used to be I trusted brands like Prestone, Fram, etc. These days it
seem they all are willing to cut corners on the product while still
spending millions on glitzy ads. Maybe the stuff at the Toyota dealer
is exactly the same as Prestone pink, green, yellow, blue, chartruse,
whatever, or maybe it is not. However, I am willing to bet the stuff
at the Toyota dealer is the actual correct, compatible anti-freeze for
your car. Why take a chance on the "good for all cars" stuff?

The CarQuest store here was selling genuine Toyots pink for $19 a gallon,
unconcentrated. From Toyota, at the time it was $27.
Try them before tearing your hair out.

I think I tried one of those places when I changed mine. But they
were out.. :( That was my original plan.. Use the "older" Toyota
red and add my own water. But they didn't have it, so had to go
with something else. I would probably prefer to use OEM coolant,
and may well go back to that on the next flush.
But I'm fairly sure at this point that you can use Prestone, and
it won't be the kiss of death to the engine. :/
The main thing is to control corrosion/rust, and I think it does that
as long as it's not old and wore out. But I may well go back to
the red stuff next time. An extra 10-15 bucks for say 3 years use
is not that big a deal. I'll flush it again real good if I change
back.
I don't like to mix them. One or the other... You mix em and you
never know what will happen, and also the color often turns to a
puke brown color.. :/
