One of the disadvantages of an older vehicle is the kids that work on
them in an emergency tend to be younger than the vehicle; and aren't
trained to do what the OBD reader doesn't tell them.

Had to help daughter move yesterday. Took the old Toy for a 600 mile
drive. Ended up only 300. Charge and Brake idiot light came on about 80
miles from destination. Figured after 25 years it was time for a new
one. Made the drive in on battery (I reckoned).

Stopped at a Toyota dealership; figured after 25 years I owed it a good
one; done right. Course being Sat. and on the road, no junkyards to be
found, the dealer didn't have a factory, so they put in an after market.
It showed 13.4v and 25-30 amps while running. Seemed a little low
yet, but should have been enough to kill the idiot lights.

Paid, started it up, and the red lights were as bright as ever. They
dinked around for 3 hours after they told me it was done and to come get
it. They called a Toyota master tech, and he said Toyotas only like
factory electrical stuff. Pretty much said it was ok to take it. Told
'em this is why I brought it in. Don't care to look at 2 red lights and
hook up a gauge so I can know if my alternator is working. GEEZ!!!

Guess I haven't worked on cars in nearly 25 years, but to me red lights
need to be out. Figured they would have to assure the diodes are good
before sending them out.

So anyway, truck is stranded, we drove daughter's car home last night,
her and her fiance will hopefully pick it up Tuesday and haul the
furniture themselves. Interesting wedding stories in a few years to
laugh at.

Poor newlyweds, 90 degrees no air, 5 speed, and the old 4 wheel system
that rides like a truck. Daddy couldn't save 'em the icky drive this time.

Looking for your input when I talk to the guys Monday.

Thanks.

Mark

If the brake and charge lights come on during revving of the engine
then it's a sign that the carbon alternator brushes require replacing
as this is the mileage for them to wear out. In alternators the
brushes wear out on average every 140-170 000 miles where on the
dashboard the brake & charge light both come on at the same time.
About half of the auto electric shops in your local yellow pages sell
carbon alternator brushes and copper solenoid starter contacts for
about $5/pair.

Another way to verify that the alternator is not charging is while the
engine is running bring a metal screwdriver or any metal object near
the alternator and if the alternator is working properly then it
should act like a magnet and grab the screwdriver.

Excellent resource here, should come in handy for folks who want to
easily fix starters and alternators when normal wear items go out.
