From: Porch on 28 Jul 2006 20:09 I just replaced the head gaskets and everything went well. But I lost track of the valve buckets/shims. Normaly, I would adjust the valves myself (never done it, but it does not look too hard), but I lack the time and the shims. Since my truck was due for the Relay Rod recall, I figued I would let the dealer take care of the valves too. Dealer is Toyota of Temecula Valley. Yes I will state there name since I buy parts from them all the time and they are a good bunch. The dealer quoted me 8 hours to do the valves? Now it takes me about 30 minutes to get eveything off and the valve covers off. Looking at the book, and with a shim set and correct SST tool in hand, I can't see it taking more then an hour to check and replace the shims. Then 30 minutes to button everything up. And I am just shade-tree with basic skills. What is the dealer doing for the next 6 hours? Is this milking it or what?
From: Tony on 28 Jul 2006 20:43 I did the valves on the my 92 Toyota Pick-up, by the way I have the special tool if you wish to buy it, and it took about 2 hours to do it. Those shims are a PAIN IN THE A$$ to take out especially the #2 cyclinder and the #5 due to their location with the items around them. Having the correct shims is the biggest part also. I found that after I did the job it still did not run right. So they may do a couple runs in between the adjustments to let everything set. From: crashq on 11 Aug 2006 18:15 The dealers are simply going to their "book" which has the estimated time to perform all of the typical automotive tasks. These books are very liberal with times. Any competent mechanic can do most of these tasks in half of the time or less.. I had a valve job done at the dealer. $3000 later I had to buy medicine to treat the hemmorhoids from my reaming. Do it yourself.
From: sam diego on 29 Aug 2006 23:03 the Book is always unfair and I believe it amounts to price fixing and should be illegal. There is no competition and that's the reason the price is unreasonable. This violates the premis of capitolism and free trade.
