From: mattrat on 22 Feb 2010 09:28 I just changed my transission fluid and filter. Fluid is the import type IV that can be purchased at Autozone for $5/ quart I purchased The manual says that <4 quarts is needed if you drain and refill. With the filter, the capacity needed was 6 quarts exactly. Taking the transmission pan down waas tricky since one row (about 4 bolts) was difficult to reach because the frame was right against them. You have to put a jack stand to lift the transmission up slightly and then use a box wrench on those bolts. The filter costs $48 at Napa or the Toyota dealer. Pep Boys has a Purolator filter for $24, but it was the wrong filter. My fluid was totally black after 66,000 miles. Just bought the car. Now it is beautiful Matt

Any idea of how the car was used before you purchased it? Does Autozone sell the actual Toyota Type IV fluid, or is the fluid at Autozone fluid an equivalent from another supplier? Did you happen to notice if they had the newer WS Toyota Fluid in stock? Ed

Does it have a drain plug, if so drain some out about every 10000, and on your next oil change since not all of it was removed, but black at milage is wrong. Heat and hard driving kills transmissions. Is your antifreeze no more than 50% antifreeze,,Redline Water Wetter makes the cooling system run about 10f cooler. |
