83770 adapter assy. Used to connect the speedo cable to the AT. These are
notorious for breaking and the original has been replaced by a (hopefully)
more durable part.

Guess I'll have to yank the old one and see if I can repair/reengineer it.
Even if it costs me $40 to repair...

Holy Cow.

The good side: these were used in a LOT of Toyota vehicles (the link above
is to a Toyota van from 1989) so there may be a few laying around in
junkyards...

It seems like it would have made more sense to just fit the speedo cable
directly to the transmission with a common size threaded connector.

Ya think??? ;)

There's the coupler, then an intermediate cable, and then the main cable.
I kept seeing "Cable 1" listed for $12. Nah, couldn't be! Nope, wasn't.
That's the short cable.

I haven't really investigated this, but when I was asking around about it
everyone said, That little adapter that plugs into the tranny goes bad.

Maybe I'll luck out and the $12 cable is the broken link...but I doubt it.

Whenever I work on my car, Murphy's law states that the most expensive part
is the one that breaks :-(
